Description

Feider FBT220 Petrol Chipper-Shredder

If you’re maintaining a large garden that generates a substantial amount of waste material, the powerful and robustly constructed Feider FBT220 Petrol Chipper-Shredder will prove a real boon!

It’s equipped with two in-feed points: there’s a wide-aperture hopper for the fast and efficient deposition of leaves, twigs and other green debris; and a smaller, cone-shaped chute designed to accept branches up to a hefty 4.9cm in diameter.

The shredding system consists of a series of metal flails, which will reduce that green waste to an easily manageable and highly compostable mulch; the chipping system comprises a flywheel-mounted HS steel blade, which effortlessly turn branches into woodchips perfect for pathways and frost protection.

The Feider FBT220 Petrol Chipper-Shredder features a belt drive that ensures the worst impact an overload can have is a broken belt, rather than the terminal engine damage that can occur with a crankshaft-type drive.

A 212cc OHV-configured four-stroke engine delivers its power quietly, smoothly and efficiently; twin transport-wheels - with sizeable pneumatic tyres - make around-the-garden movement simple.

  • Also suitable for green waste (leaves, hedge cuttings, etc.)

  1. A good machine but with an interesting trap for young players 1 people found this helpful

    Assembly

    Performance

Some assembly was needed and the instructions could have been a little clearer. The fuel line wasn't connected to the carburetor but happily (given the details below) I noticed that before I filled the tank. Not hard to start, but it refused to run for more than about 75 seconds, and would not restart until after I turned off the fuel supply and began the whole starting sequence again. Eventually I discovered that the machine's markings for the fuel tap are reversed. When the lever is 'off', the fuel supply is actually on, and the carburetor gets enough fuel to allow a start. Then, following the instructions and moving the fuel lever to 'on' leads to disappointment a minute or so later. So a quick test start at the supplier's premises is no guarantee! Given earlier reviews, I guess this machine is a little different from those reviewed in 2019. However, now that the machine and I are on the same page, we are getting on well. The large chute for twigs, etc.jams up fairly easily (a design problem shared by many other shredders) so it has to be loaded sparingly, but the machine is powerful, not too noisy, and handles branches well. I'm happy with it.

  2. Does the Job given Time and Patience 4 people found this helpful

    Ease of Use

    Assembly

    Performance

Basically it works as you would expect given its design. Chipping works well with straight branches - others will need cutting into sections. Shredding needs care and thought. When working with one year growth hedge-cuttings (beech, bay, hazel etc) you will need to cut the clippings into 4 to 6 inch bits before shredding if you are going to avoid the hopper jamming up regularly. Also you will still get lengths of twig coming out the back-end chute and jamming in the grills sufficient to cause a build up of shredded material back into the shredding area unless you clear it regularly. Don't forget your ear muffs as well.

  3. Quite Satisfactory Represents Good Value for Money. 2 people found this helpful

    Assembly

    Performance

The assembly was quite straightforward, although there were some bolts missing. An exploded diagram would have been useful. Starting took one or two pulls but got easier once I'd worked out how to balance the choke and throttle settings. On my first, rather over enthusiastic use I overloaded the top chute and stalled the machine. Once I'd worked out what went where I spent two hours working through a rather large pile of hedge trimmings, the remains of a lilac tree and other bits and pieces. I found that the feed chute for the larger branches had to have any side shoots cut off or it wouldn't feed in. I thought it was well put together and quite robust. At present it is doing just what we want it to do and represents good value. Now I will see how long it takes before I have to take the blades out to sharpen them.
